Breaking the Habit: Best way to Quit Smoking Forever
Quitting Smoking for good
Recently I had undergone a great change in my life, something I know every other smoker also wishes to go through someday, but that someday never seems to come for some people. That’s why I’m writing this post, to help anyone else out there understand what the best way to quit smoking really is!
The addiction which prevents us from reaching our goal
We’ve all heard of cigarette addiction, but only those who are smokers really know the tremendous effect of addiction really is. We may quit some days, and then return back to our bad habit the other day; this is because of the common “nicotine cravings” we get after we’ve gone a while without smoking. Because of this addiction, some people spend their entire lives stuck as smokers, but I’m proud to say I actually did manage to break the habit with a few simple rules which I believe will help ANYONE who tries these methods to quit.
How to really quit smoking forever
For anyone who’s really serious about quitting, you must do one simple thing right now and make sure it sinks in really deep before trying anything, which is to finally make a decision to stop smoking forever, period. Before you can move on to the other steps of quitting, you must decide right now in your mind, to finally quit smoking for sure. Throw away any cigarettes you may have with you, decide finally that you’re going cold-turkey, meaning you’re going to stop smoking from the minute you decide you’re quitting.
How do you decide when and how to finally quit smoking?
How do you mentally decide exactly that you’re going to quit? Well firstly think about the facts which may scare you at first, but will help you out in the long run. Think of things such as you won’t be smoking anymore when you’re stressed, which for me is the most important fact to absorb and understand. Also keep in mind that there will be no more lighting one up right before going to bed. Another key important fact to realize, no more smoking after meals, this is usually when most smokers get the strongest urges.
You need to realize that you WILL get around 5-6 strong urges to smoke daily, now it’s up to you to be strong enough to control yourself, this will be like a battle going on within your mind, and you must not surrender to the urge at all costs!
So how do you control these powerful urges?
Anyone who’s ever quit smoking will tell you that they had certain times during the day when they would get powerful urges to go for a smoke, and these are usually the urges we give into most of the time. If you want to stand up to these urges you MUST note down (on paper if you have to remind yourself) of exactly when you get these urges. Is it right after eating a meal? Or maybe it’s during stressful situations. And for some people it can even be as simple as just a walk outside.
When these urges hit, they hit hard! And if you’re not prepared for them, they WILL defeat you, causing you to retreat into failure to quit smoking once again.
Final Tips on how to quit smoking for good
One thing I started doing to prevent the urges from taking over was to simply understand when and at what moments my urges would be strongest and become defensive and attentive during those times to the urges. From my journey I learned it’s usually these times of the day when the urges happen and most of the time we’re defenseless to even think twice about what we’re about to do!
The ultimate reason to quit smoking, if you don’t already know it
Smoking slowly kills our bodies. We’ve been taught that since we we’re kids, I guess it just became an overstated fact so we kind of just put it behind us.
Realize the fact that procrastinating quitting smoking will only kill you eventually, not at once, but slowly for sure. Even me, a cross-country runner, noticed bad effects and diminished stamina due to smoking. Not only that, but it also irritated my lungs all the time. I’ll never forget the first week after I had quit smoking how fresh I started feeling!
Even though it was a difficult process, I urge all people to quit smoking today, a week of irritation and struggle is definitely worth it to live a healthy and happier life, and to apply these concepts which if found to be the best way of quitting smoking.
